For many years I painted and modified 15mm lead soldiers from the Napoleonic and Malburian eras for wargaming purposes. As my friends were all modelling English, German or Prussian troops it was out of necessity that I modelled French - so that on the wargame table we could re-enact battles.
Apart from a dabble in World War 1 French infantry and tanks, the many varied infantry, artillery and cavalry troops of Napoleon were my main modelling interest.
I found that I was far more interested in researching unit details and producing very realistically painted figures than playing wargames. This led to me being awarded third prize in an international modelling competition in London in 1997. Following this success I left the wargame table and concentrating on solely painting high quality military figures.
After a break of a couple of years I restarted with a squadron of scratch build Argentine lancers. A local gallery commissioned me to produce a series of 15mm dioramas commemorating significant battles. This re-awakened my interest in figure modelling and I decided to go upscale in order to expand my skills.
In mid 2006 I completed my first 54mm model. It required a totally different painting technique than those of 15mm scale. This larger scale is now my main interest and I have received many congratulations and good reports on the end results.
